Many seniors with extra free time on their hands find it rewarding to give back to their community by volunteering. And the benefits go both ways. Not only is it great for the community, but it also can boost a senior’s confidence, provide a fantastic opportunity for socialization, and help keep the mind active.
Volunteer at the Library
Local libraries are always in need of a helping hand. Opportunities vary by branch, but some popular ways to chip in include shelving books, reading to children, or becoming a literacy tutor. Knit Caps for Chemo Patients
Are you a crafter? Knots of Love offers a great way to craft for a cause. And you can do it from the comfort of home. Put your knitting or crocheting skills to use and make caps for men, women, and children undergoing chemotherapy or blankets for infants in neonatal intensive care units. Be sure to read up on the details before mailing in your creations! Since 2007, Knots of Love has distributed nearly 500,000 caps and blankets throughout the United States.
Become a Mentor
Mentor a child and make a world of difference. Programs like Big Brothers Big Sisters of America and Big Brothers Big Sisters of Canada pair up adults with children who could use an adult role model to help them reach their full potential. What you and your little brother or sister do is up to you. You could go for a hike, play board games, hang out and talk – the possibilities are endless.
Meals on Wheels
Here’s a great way for active seniors to help their fellow seniors. This widely known organization arranges for volunteers to deliver nutritious meals to seniors who struggle to get around and might otherwise forgo a healthy diet. Check out Meals on Wheels America to find the branch nearest you. Near a Brightwater community in Canada? Both Winnipeg and Regina have similar programs.
This is just a sampling of volunteer ideas. There are so many other ways to donate your time to a good cause. Really dig into what your community has to offer. Research local charities online. Check the local newspaper. You never know what’s out there.
