Give to Your Community with These Senior Volunteer Opportunities

|

Volunteer work is a great way to honor your community. Not only does it help you make a difference, but it's an opportunity for you to keep your mind and body active. One in five senior citizens makes time for volunteer work, and studies show that their quality of life is better for it. So why wait? Brightwater has some ideas for things you can do to give back to your community and feel great doing it.

Knit Clothes & Blankets for Those in Need

If you have skills in knitting or crocheting, you can make clothes and blankets for those who need them. Organizations like Project Linus are dedicated to providing warmth for ill, troubled, or in-need children and adults. You'll find opportunities to share your homemade work at local shelters, hospitals, and programs. Depending on where you volunteer, you can create and share items such as quilts, comforters, mittens, hats, or even simple lap blankets. Find joy in providing comfort to those who need it.

Become a Foster Care Mentor

Children in foster care may struggle more than the average child. While they're being sheltered and cared for, there's always room to help them improve and maximize their quality of life and education. At programs like Foster Care to Success, you can sign up as a volunteer to offer children ages 1-18 personal mentoring and tutoring. Provide a child with personal attention to keep them on track toward a brighter future. Find your local social service agency to get involved.

Create Care Packages for Homeless Shelters

Homelessness is an unfortunate reality for many people. You can help make a difference for those in need by providing well-made care packages. Find and contact a homeless shelter near you to see where you can help. Make a collection of food, hygiene products, feminine products, socks/gloves, and even first aid supplies. Be sure to seal the package in a waterproof bag to protect it from liquid damage. A little bit goes a long way for those in need.
